Strike Zone Fall through Winter
As water temperatures drop in the winter months, a trout's metabolism slows dramatically. To conserve energy, trout migrate to deeper pools and runs with slow to moderate currents. These areas - often referred to as "soft water" - provide ideal winter holding spots, allowing trout to rest while the current delivers food directly into their feeding lanes.

During this time, it's crucial to fish nymphs deep and slow. Cover the water thoroughly - trout won't move far to chase food in the cold. Keep in mind that fish often group together in winter. If you catch one, there's a good chance more are nearby.
