Scud Olive

Fly Details
Scud Olive
The Bead Head Scud imitates freshwater shrimp, a crucial food source i nlakes, spring creeks, and slack water environments. The added bead head helps the fly sink quickly into the strike zone, where scuds naturally reside. This pattern is highly effective when dead drifted under an indicator or retrieved with short, twitchy 6-12 inch strips to mimic natural movement. A reliable choice year-round, especially in stillwater and spring-fed systems where scuds thrive.

Presentation
This pattern fishes well year-round in a Nymph Rig, especially when presented near the bottom. It is most commonly tied on as the smaller dropper to match the subtle profile of natural insects.
Fished in tandem with a highly visible dry fly acting as an indicator, it allows the nymph to hang higher in the water column targeting fish that are keyed in on insects near the surface.
Use this fly in an Emerger Rig to allow the nymph to drift naturally through the water column, imitating a swimming freshwater shrimp. A slow, drag-free drift or subtle lift at the end of the presentation can trigger aggressive strike from fish feeding on suspended scuds.
